When I took a quick look on Monday, the chick had come out of the hole in the tree:

This is just what the two chicks from 2023 did:

This is a major development and means our little sprout will soon be on the wing. It’s been getting too big for the hole it calls home. (As ever, click on the pics for a better look.)



When not exercising its wings, it was performing hamstring stretches:



Which made it sleepy:



So getting up and out of the hole was probably a wonderful relief — all that space! But when a parent showed up with food, it caused some confusion:

The parent was so used to heading into the nest to feed its chick, it blew straight in, causing the chick to carry on, in the old Australian idiom, like a pork chop.

Before I had to leave, I saw the young bird looking a bit dubious about getting back into the nest, and hoped very much that it would. It looked very vulnerable there — and the way back was quite risky.
